Is Electrolysis Really That Slow? My Honest Take

When I first started electrolysis, I thought it would be like laser—zap, done, hair gone forever. Boy, was I wrong. If you’re considering it, you need to know that slow results are totally normal, and honestly, expected. Let me walk you through what I’ve learned after months of treatments.

First off, each hair follicle has to be treated individually. The electrologist inserts a tiny probe into the follicle and zaps it with a little electric current to destroy the root. That means a full upper lip session might only clear 20-30 hairs in 15 minutes. At first, I was frustrated—I’d leave the salon and still see stubble! But my technician explained that the hair needs to be in the active growth phase to work, and only about a third of hairs are at that stage at any time.

So expect to go back every week or two for many months. For small areas like the chin or eyebrows, you might see progress in 6-12 sessions. For larger areas like legs or arms? Think 1-2 years of regular appointments. I’m currently getting my underarms done, and after 8 sessions I’ve maybe cleared 40% of the hair.

“Patience is key, and consistency is your best friend. Don’t expect overnight miracles—this is a marathon, not a sprint.”

Another thing: the hair doesn’t just disappear. After a session, the treated hairs will start to shed over the next few days. But they look like they’re still there because the root is dying and the shaft is still visible. Around day 5-7, they usually fall out easily when you wash or exfoliate. I remember thinking nothing was happening until I gently rubbed my chin and a tiny hair just rolled off. That was my first real win.

You’ll also need to let the hair grow a bit between sessions—at least a few days of visible stubble—so the electrologist can see which follicles to target. That was hard for me because I wanted to be smooth all the time. But if you shave or pluck between appointments, you’re resetting the clock. Trust me, I learned that the hard way.

And yes, it can be painful. It’s like a tiny pinch or a static shock each time. But you get used to it, and some areas (like the upper lip) are more sensitive than others (like arms). My electrologist uses a numbing cream before sessions, which helps a ton.

So if you’re looking for instant gratification, electrolysis is not for you. But if you want permanent results and are willing to commit to the slow and steady process, it’s absolutely worth it. I’ve already seen a big reduction in my chin hair, and I’m finally not feeling self-conscious about it. Just keep showing up, and the results will come—eventually.
